Definiton of Transformation: A process by which one figure, expression, or function is converted into another that is equivalent in some important respect but is differently expressed or represented.
Architecture is closely associated with transformation. It is used in quiet a few minor ways but one way that we will look into is very important.

Translation
Transformations are used when the building process actually starts and you have to "translate" the blueprint to the building area. You have to move the blueprint into the boundaries of the building area while keeping the design same as the blueprint. This is basically a Translation.
Rotation and Reflection
Rotation and Reflection provide a sense of movement and rhythm in architectural elements and an emphasis on the central point of the architectural space. Here are a few examples. Sacristy of the basilica of S. Spirito in Florence, designed by Giuliano da San Gallo in the last years of the fifteenth century, is octagonal in plan and both the architecture and the distinctive pavement design exhibit rotational and reflection. Domes, whether hemispherical such as that of the Pantheon or octagonal such as the great cupola of the Cathedral of Florence designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, also exhibit both rotation and reflection.
Dilation
Dilation is obviously used when building the structure from a blueprint because the blueprint is most probably not the exact size of the building. But the exterior design, angles, and interior structure should all stay the same. This is what a dilation is in our regular geometry.
